SUMMER 2020 / ANN ARBOR, MI
INSTRUCTORS: JULIA & JOHN MCMORROUGH

TAUBMAN COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE & URBAN PLANNING
“The impact of this project is threefold: as a learning model (spatial
analogues for blended learning), as a teaching model (teach a person to
fish, i.e., students to make professional “homemade” videos), and as an
employment model (a WPA for students).
What has become apparent in this era of physical distancing is that design education is not confined to credit hours, but is held within the walls of the College (its architecture, its inhabitants, and their interactions). This project seeks to contribute a body of material that can address this missing component, which is in part affective (what it feels like to be part of a school of design), part instructional (how do I do “blank” with limited means?), and part cultural (how do you pronounce “Leh cor-BOOS-ee-ay”?). We plan to “grow” the project as an ongoing effort. Regardless of how many topics are initially covered, it will never be a definitive set. The videos will be examples and exemplary - in that they are about the content of what to do, but also how to do it, providing examples that can be emulated in the creation of other videos which can address other topics and emerging issues (like the emulative dance videos of Tik Tok). On all fronts, we are most excited by the possibility of being able to use this initiative to employ students who are currently struggling to get summer or other jobs.”
